Osmothèque

In 1976, a perfumer named Jean Kerléo had a simple yet mind-boggling idea: if libraries preserve books and museums preserve paintings, who would preserve scents? Fourteen years later, the Osmothèque was born—the world’s first perfume conservatory—founded on the principle that olfactory creations constitute a cultural heritage that is as legitimate as it is irreplaceable. And more fragile than anything else.

Housed at 8 rue Saint-Simon in Versailles since September 2025, the conservatory holds a collection of 6,000 perfumes and 2,000 raw materials spanning more than two thousand years of olfactory history. The bottles are preserved in an argon atmosphere at a constant temperature, in their original formulations. Among them are 800 perfumes that are no longer available commercially, recreated from formulas archived by the “osmotheques”—the conservatory’s in-house perfumers. The collection includes the Imperial Eau de Cologne created by Guerlain for Empress Eugénie in 1853, classics by Coty, Poiret, Houbigant, and Caron that cannot be purchased anywhere else, and even a recreation of the Royal Perfume of the Parthian kings described by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century.

The Osmothèque is not a museum where you simply walk through, looking at display cases. The sessions are led by perfumers or perfume historians in small groups, focusing on bottles that are opened, raw materials that are smelled, and stories that are told. The “Discovery” sessions trace the history of perfumery from antiquity to the present day. Themed lectures delve deeper into specific perfume houses, periods, and ingredients. A collection to be smelled, not just seen.
